As a child, I listened with fascination to the annual Christmas story—the gifts, the parties, the family gatherings. But as I grew older, skepticism set in. I concluded that not only was Santa Claus a feel-good fable, but the entire Christmas tale rested on wishful thinking.
Sure, believing in Jesus could offer solace to sincere but simple folks. It might spark feelings of hope for those who prefer fantasy over reality. But as a law-trained newspaperman, I dealt in facts—and I was convinced they supported my atheism, not Christianity.
All of that changed when I revisited one of the most famous Bible passages about Christmas: an angel announcing to a group of shepherds, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:11).
Was this a hoax? A hallucination? Or the pivotal event of human history—the incarnation of the living God?
As a reporter for The Chicago Tribune, my job was to separate rumor from reality and fact from fiction. So I decided to investigate the most crucial question of all: Who was in the manger that first Christmas morning?
In The Case for Christmas, I expand on my original investigation from The Case for Christ into the roots of this cherished holiday.
Can we really trust the Gospels to tell us the true story of Jesus’ birth? Did the virgin birth actually occur—or was it borrowed from ancient mythology? Did the baby in Bethlehem truly fulfill the prophecies of the Messiah?
Join me in separating hard evidence from holiday tradition. Like me, you may discover this quest is the most important endeavor of your life.
