As a child, I listened with fascination to the annual Christmas story—the gifts, the parties, the family gatherings. But as I grew older, skepticism set in. I concluded that not only was Santa Claus a feel-good fable, but the entire Christmas tale rested on wishful thinking.

Sure, believing in Jesus could offer solace to sincere but simple folks. It might spark feelings of hope for those who prefer fantasy over reality. But as a law-trained newspaperman, I dealt in facts—and I was convinced they supported my atheism, not Christianity.

All of that changed when I revisited one of the most famous Bible passages about Christmas: an angel announcing to a group of shepherds, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:11).
